Overview
Paediatric Immediate Life Support was developed by Resuscitation Council UK for healthcare professionals who may have to manage and treat paediatric patients in an emergency. PILS develops skills in recognising the seriously ill child, providing initial treatment to prevent cardiorespiratory arrest, treating respiratory or cardiorespiratory arrest until more experienced help arrives, and working effectively as part of a team during paediatric emergencies.
Audience
The PILS course is appropriate for a range of healthcare professionals that are involved in the care of children and young people.
Learning objectives
- Understand the structured ABCDE approach that supports rapid recognition of the seriously ill child.
- Provide appropriate initial treatment interventions to prevent cardiorespiratory arrest.
- Treat children in respiratory or cardiorespiratory arrest until the arrival of a resuscitation team or more experienced assistance.
- Become an effective team member who can respond appropriately in a paediatric emergency.
Assessment
- Assessment is continuous throughout the course and is guided by the assessment forms provided for each core skill.
- The course consists of lectures, skill stations and simulations, with candidates expected to prepare by reading the PILS manual in advance.
- Some centres may send a multiple-choice question paper before the course to support learning.
- Successful candidates receive a Resuscitation Council UK PILS provider certificate valid for 1 year.
